Cleaning Pearl Jewelry: A Gentle Approach
Pearls are organic gemstones that require special care. Unlike harder gems, pearls have a soft nacre coating that can be damaged by harsh chemicals, abrasive materials, or improper cleaning techniques.
Why Pearls Need Special Care
Pearls are relatively soft (2.5-4.5 on the Mohs hardness scale) and porous. They can be damaged by acids, extreme temperatures, and rough handling. Perfume, hairspray, and cosmetics can dull their luster over time.
Before You Clean: Pre-Cleaning Tips
- Put pearl jewelry on last when dressing (after perfume, makeup, hairspray)
- Remove pearl jewelry before exercising, swimming, or showering
- Wipe pearls with a soft cloth after each wearing to remove oils and residue
- Store pearls separately in a soft pouch or lined jewelry box
Safe Home Cleaning Method
- Create your cleaning solution: Add a single drop of mild soap to luke-warm water in a small bowl.
- Dampen the cloth: Dip a corner of your soft cloth into the solution and wring out well.
- Clean each pearl: Gently wipe each pearl individually.
- Rinse: Use a second soft cloth dampened with plain luke-warm water.
- Dry: Lay flat on a clean towel to air dry completely before storing.
- Buff: Once dry, gently buff with a dry soft cloth to restore shine.
What NOT to Do
- Never submerge pearl strands in water
- Never use ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, or jewelry cleaners
- Never use abrasive cloths, paper towels, or rough materials
- Never use harsh chemicals, ammonia, or vinegar
Long-Term Pearl Care
Store pearls separately from other jewelry. Professional restringing is recommended every 1-2 years for frequently worn strands.
